Purpose
Our project has several aims:
• To help the orphans build self-confidence
o Not having parents to take care of them might have seriously affected their childhood.
o They might have the wrong mindset that they are unwanted and unloved.
o Thus we feel that it is important to boost their confidence, as they had a harder childhood than most others and and would not have the same level of confidence as others.
• To enable the orphans to be more self-reliant and independent.
o Growing up without the care and concern of parents, they need to be able to take care of themselves in the harsh world.
o By helping them to be more self-reliant and independent, it would be helping them to survive in the real world.
• To allow the orphans to make new friends with people outside their usual social circle
o Children usually have a social circle that’s limited to their school and their neighborhood.
o Being orphans, they do not have the chance to really mix around with other children of their own age.
o By organizing this camp, it would enable them interact more with others of their own age, as well as to make more friends.
• To allow the facilitators to gain leadership skills
o Students usually do not get many chances at leading others, or even planning events for others unless they are in the Student Council.
o However most of them do not have the time to participate in all Council activities.
o It also enables them to know more about the lives of orphans, which they are most likely ignorant of.
o This project is a good opportunity for them to develop and demonstrate their leadership skills and to learn about new things.
With all these aims in mind, we plan to organize a camp to make the orphans’ lives more interesting and fun-filled.
Details:
No of children: Approximately 120-150 children
Volunteers: we have managed to successfully involve 30 committed volunteers from river valley high school (our targeted number of volunteers has been attained). There are fifteen male volunteers and fifteen female volunteers. One male facilitator would be paired with a female facilitator to ensure that the orphans would feel at ease at all times.)
Homes we would invite: It would depends on the number of homes interested in the programme. We would prefer to invite different homes so that the children would be able to mingle.
Targeted age group: 10-12 yrs old
Materials we would require for the activities: We would not try to exceed $150 for the materials bought.
Goodie packs and prizes: We can encourage people from our school to donate their used items which are still in good conditions to the orphans. We could write in to our school to get the permission to set up a booth to collect these items and these items could be used as prizes.
Lodging: We would preferably try to get one of the MOE campsites. This list of considered campsites is listed in the later part of this proposal and we would write in to ask if we could use their premises.
Food: We would source for caterers that would charge cheaper prices. To cut costs, only lunch and dinner would be catered. We are considering buying loaves of bread and jars of jam, peanut butter etc. for breakfast as well as small packets of biscuits for supper.
When we have settled the details, we would inform the orphanages. Packing lists, consent forms as well as personal particulars forms would be given out to the orphanages’ managers.
